The name speaks for itself—touch table lamps are basically table lamps that are activated by a single touch. With a simple brush of your finger against the lamp, you can turn it on without having to click a switch—a pretty neat twist to your average, everyday table lamp, isn’t it?
Touching the lamp does not only cause it to switch on or off but it also changes the amount of light it emits based on the number of times you touch it. One usually needs to tap the lamp three or four times to set it to its brightest setting. Touch table lamp work by sensing pressure. It works primarily on the principle of capacitance. Sensors in the lamp detect electrical charges present within our bodies and as a result are automatically turned on or off. Our bodies naturally contain a certain amount of electric charge and are good conductors of electricity, which is why table lamps are instantly activated by touching. Furthermore, most touch lamps are sensitive all around, thus we need not only touch one particular area in the lamp to activate it.
A downside to these lamps however, is that any form of contact can turn it on. These lamps can even be accidentally activated by our own pets, and when left unwatched, could take up so much electricity. They also run the risk of overheating, and so it may be necessary to unplug the lamp altogether when not used. Generally though, compared to ordinary table lamp, touch lamp is pretty easy to maintain. There is no risk of having dirt or dust lodged into the switch which would consequently impair it. Of course, as with every other appliance, touch lamps also require ample amount of care in order to prolong its life. Nevertheless, touch table lamps are great appendages to any home.
